Hell yeah.
1UP had a little article a while back about "E3" from 20 years ago (when games were shown off at CES). Aw man, this was during the day when the original Nintendo was in power and the Sega Genesis had only been around a short time. If only I could travel back in time, because to me this was when gaming REALLY started to get interesting with the introduction of the Genesis. Still to this day my favorite console. Click right here to see the article in all it's glory. Thanks to Windows Gamer.
Are you the type of person who’s gaming habits constantly change? Maybe sometimes you play nothing but first person shooters for however long and then find yourself wanting to play an old school top down RPG. Or maybe you jump from system to system like I do. When you’re in a position like me and have lots and lots of choices … you tend to jump around. I have at LEAST 7 computers in this house of varying degrees of usefulness with literally thousands of games, an NES, a Retro Duo (a review of which is elsewhere on this site), Sega Genesis, 32X, various versions of the old Game Boy. A few PS1’s, a few Dreamcasts, a friggin’ Atari Lynx, a Playstation 2 and a ton and a half of those cheesy little Play and Play TV games … although I feel a little guilty not having the Atari Flashback 2 … my 29th birthday is soon. Bear that in mind. ;) And that’s not even all of them.
I originally tried posting this on Geek Gamer Radio for Valentine’s Day … unfortunately Chase thought the post was a little too “racy” or something along those lines and it never made it to the site.
Then I thought “to hell with it, I’ll put it on mine. There’s all kinds of racy stuff on mine.” so here it is.
The pictures COULD be considered not safe for work or some of that nonsense, it just depends on your definition of that term. I’ll make you hit a jump anyway.
I could definitely see the 4chan kids going nuts over this thing though.
There are some morons out there who actually want to SAVE Internet Explorer 6. Really? You've got to be fucking kidding me. Who the hell even willingly USES that piece of shit other than to download a better browser like Firefox, Google Chrome, Opera or Safari? I'll give it that. It works fucking GREAT for that. But for anything else? Not with the modern internet. It's just too out of date with the standards, and webmasters are getting sick of having to rework entire sites just to work on this outdated pile of dogshit. Save IE6. What the fuck? Click here to check out this joke of a site. And yes, do tell your friends to use IE6. When they first get their computers, it'll let them get a GOOD browser. A MODERN browser. Something that doesn't freak out over every little javascript thing that comes up. Something that blocks popups and ads. Something that doesn't take the entire computer with it when a page causes it to crash somehow (there are lots of assholes who run sites specifically for that). Go on. Tell them to use it! And be sure to click the "Sign the Petition" link to see the other morons who who it ... frighteningly enough ... on a regular basis? Don't worry, when you click the link you won't actually sign it.
And I'm well aware that there are people who visit this site who use this browser for some reason. GET A REAL BROWSER. For fuck's sake the thing is 8 years old.

Now this is just speaking for me in specific, although I'm sure a lot of people would agree with this.
I have a 30GB 5th generation iPod video. That's what I use to listen to all my MP3s and podcasts. I could really care less about the music store because I'm not a big fan of DRM. Yes, I am aware that they have DRM free downloads for a little bit more, but I don't really care.
Okay, I've said it before. But I'll say it again just in case you're new and you missed it. My default machine is an Acer Aspire One netbook with an 8.9" screen. Now, the size of the screen isn't really an issue to me, thanks to the 1024x600 resolution I can see the screen just fine.
But rather than get a regular old boring-ass USB keyboard, I got a bluetooth keyboard (Rocketfish or somethin'). And I already have a wireless mouse. So now I can use my computer anywhere in the room. But get too far away and you won't be able to see the screen.
But the keyboard was 15 bucks, so fuck it. I like it. Will make playing some of these old DOS games so much easier without having to worry about that tiny arrow key layout on the netbook's keyboard. And I also got Star Trek : The Next Generation Season 2 on DVD and Tetris for the NES complete in box with the manual and all that at Goodwill. :P
I saw the recent episode of Penn & Teller's Bullshit about the violent video games. I also saw a short interview with Dan Akroyd regarding Ghostbusters : The Video Game where he said that the game isn't a "murder simulator". That you don't actually harm ANY humans in the game. With all the bullshit Jack Thompson pulls with regards to games like Grand Theft Auto and all these parents bitching that games shouldn't exist, it gets ridiculous. And I'm a parent. I have a 7 year old daughter. I'm also smart enough to know that those ratings are there for a reason. She LOVES horror movies, and I can't wait for the night when we sit down together and watch one of the old Freddy or Jason movies. She loves The Grudge, and I went out and bought her her own copies of the movie (rated PG-13 versions thank you), she loves Army of Darkness and stuff like that. She loves watching me play Left 4 Dead and DooM 3. And , much like me as a result of seeing those, she doesn't wanna hurt a fly.
I've been playing these "murder simulators"(first person shooters) since Wolfenstein 3D. I love them. I'm more into the run and gun style gameplay of the old Wolfenstein 3D, DooM, Quake and Unreal Tournament. Later on I tried Grand Theft Auto when it went 3D and didn't like it. I don't like Halo ... I see it as a substandard shooter with a boring story. I don't really like the Call of Duty games, though I do own CoD 4 : Modern Warfare for the 360 and the PC ... though with the PC version I was more interested as to whether or not my PC would actually run it than actually playing it. Gears of War was alright for a playthrough, but the multiplayer gets old quickly.
And I got to think about it, they say these games train kids to kill. You look down the barrel of a rfle and kill kill kill. Grand Theft Auto teaches you to pick up hookers, fuck 'em to get your health back and kill them to get your money back (didn't Zelda 2 do something like that minus the killing part?). Halo and Call of Duty are kinda like "sniper simulators" because that's all I've really encountered when I've played the games. Here was a rundown of my last play of Call of Duty 4 : I spawn in, look around. Nobody around. I run up to a wall, peek around the corner. Nobody there. I go to run across to an opposite wall, I hear a gunshot and I fall over. Then I say "fuck it" and return to a game that's actually fun : Unreal Tournament 3.
But back to what I was saying, these people are retarded. I understand that these games are not made for children. I do plan on letting my daughter play games like Left 4 Dead, because that's the kind of thing that I'm into. And in Left 4 Dead you don't actually kill humans (unless you're a dick to your team), you're killing all zombies. And when I let her play something like that I'm going to make damned sure she knows that it's not ok to hurt people. It's not the game industry's concern to tell kids what is right and wrong. It's us as parents. When I let her watch The Grudge and Army of Darkness I make sure she knows the difference between fantasy and reality. Yes, I know that Army of Darkness is rated R, but if you've ever seen the movie before you can agree with me the movie is comic bookish in nature and WAAAAAY too over the top. And my parents did the same with me when I was a kid and watching the Freddy and Jason movies. Later on, Wolfenstein 3D came out and I knew the difference between fantasy and reality. DooM came out and I just had a blast with it. And I've never deliberately caused physical harm to someonee who didn't deserve it.
Parents out there, quit assuming the games industry owes you. If your kid plays Grand Theft Auto and goes out and kills someone, YOU fucked up. The game didn't cause anything like that. The kid would've done it REGARDLESS of the game. For now, my kid is perfectly content playing games like Pac-Man, Sonic : The Hedgehog (the Genesis versions, not the 3D crap), Mario, Dance Dance Revolution and board games. And if she wants to keep playing games like that as she gets older, that's fine. Or if she doesn't want to play them at all, that's fine too. But regardless of any of that, it's MY job as a parent to make sure she knows the difference from right and wrong. And fantasy and reality. She isn't going to see those games as "murder simulators". She is going to see them as GAMES.
I've been on the internet a hell of a long time. It came around this area in 1994, and before then I had been getting on services such as America Online, Prodigy, Compuserve, and of course, the venerable bulletin board. In most of my life using computers, there hasn't really been a time where I wasn't online in some form or another.
Basically, when you spend your 35 bucks on this thing and use it ... when you're TV is off the console gets no power. Or whatever else you happen to have plugged into it because they use a lot of power or something. Hit the jump for a little more.
Yeah, I know I haven't been posting on here lately. Although I have been posting on here lately. But I have been posting on other sites. Given how self centered I am about most things, you'd think I'd be doing more on here. Oh well.
Anyway, Google's OS is coming out soon. Here's some info from the blog:
It's been an exciting nine months since we launched the Google Chrome browser. Already, over 30 million people use it regularly. We designed Google Chrome for people who live on the web — searching for information, checking email, catching up on the news, shopping or just staying in touch with friends. However, the operating systems that browsers run on were designed in an era where there was no web. So today, we're announcing a new project that's a natural extension of Google Chrome — the Google Chrome Operating System. It's our attempt to re-think what operating systems should be.
Google Chrome OS is an open source, lightweight operating system that will initially be targeted at netbooks. Later this year we will open-source its code, and netbooks running Google Chrome OS will be available for consumers in the second half of 2010. Because we're already talking to partners about the project, and we'll soon be working with the open source community, we wanted to share our vision now so everyone understands what we are trying to achieve.
Speed, simplicity and security are the key aspects of Google Chrome OS. We're designing the OS to be fast and lightweight, to start up and get you onto the web in a few seconds. The user interface is minimal to stay out of your way, and most of the user experience takes place on the web. And as we did for the Google Chrome browser, we are going back to the basics and completely redesigning the underlying security architecture of the OS so that users don't have to deal with viruses, malware and security updates. It should just work.
Google Chrome OS will run on both x86 as well as ARM chips and we are working with multiple OEMs to bring a number of netbooks to market next year. The software architecture is simple — Google Chrome running within a new windowing system on top of a Linux kernel. For application developers, the web is the platform. All web-based applications will automatically work and new applications can be written using your favorite web technologies. And of course, these apps will run not only on Google Chrome OS, but on any standards-based browser on Windows, Mac and Linux thereby giving developers the largest user base of any platform.
Hey. I have a netbook! :P Can't wait to give it a try.
