Since this is a trial impression and not an actual review, I don’t see it as important as an actual full out review. So I’m just going to talk about the default mode of the game called Stage Attack. There are multiple modes you can play however called Line Attack, Bomb Attack, Dice Attack and Endless. All the modes but Endless are accessible in the trial for the first two levels out of six so you can go and grab the free trial to check those out. But if you’re anything like me, you’ll play the default mode first.
The way you play the game is actually pretty cool in theory and it works well. All you do is join blocks together with matching colors on the playfield using a connector with combo possibilities. So long as they don’t touch. And obviously to provide some challenge the blocks move toward you.
The graphics are actually pretty good and what they’ve done with the avatars is fairly impressive and something I haven’t seen before. The background looks good, though I didn’t get far enough into it to tell if there were more than just the one. The music is good, but gets a little irritating after a while, which can thankfully be turned off. The sound effects are pretty slim but work.
It’s the gameplay itself that needs work. Your aiming reticule at the bottom moves very slowly and moves one block at a time. So you need to constantly hit left or right to move across in that direction with any kind of speed, while smacking the A button the whole time to use your connector. And it doesn’t work all that well. I always thought it was difficult to screw up the controls in a puzzle game, but this game manages to do that. And it was the frustration of the controls is why I didn’t get all the way through the trial. I would have bought it outright if the controls didn’t feel so damned clunky because it has local two player support and a lot of different modes of play with some decent graphics.
BUT in the end, give the trial a try. It’s only 80 points if you wanna buy it, if you’re more forgiving then I am and you can get past the clunky controls. This is a really cool idea for a game. I just personally couldn’t get past the controls to give up my space bucks. I may eventually, there are a lot of trials that I never nabbed at first that I got later. But for now, I’ll stick to the trial for this one.
