My first impression of the trial … “Good Lord this looks like utter crap”. And it does, the graphics are terrible. The finest MS Paint has to offer in the hands of a novice. The music is irritating, the sound is pretty good though.
Why then is this a first impression rather than a trial impression? To be perfectly honest because the game pissed me off. I died in the trial and got a game over and said “Okay, I’m going to spend 80 space bucks on principle.”
And while the presentation is utterly terrible, it’s actually a hell of a lot of fun (if a little cheap and hard). There are definitely some issues with the game, most notably when the enemies spawn you have about a split second to get out of the way before they do some damage. And the sheer number of enemies (there could be hundreds on screen at a time) means you’re going to get hit. A lot. But there’s plenty of health and the occasional extra life. Yes, this game does get one thing majorly right … no retarded one hit kills that bring almost every game like this down.
It’s a dual stick shooter, something that’s becoming a dime a dozen on XBLIG. But it sets itself apart by #1) not being in space or flying around in a ship and #2) There are loads of different weapons … including a flamethrower believe it or not. A rather lame attempt at a story mode (I’m only on the second chapter of four in it though. But I really don’t see it getting better) … and a survival mode that’s actually pretty fun. There are tons of things to help you along like health and what I’m guessing are things that recharge your gun because after a while of shooting your rate of fire goes down. You can improve your abilities like increasing the number of shots and increasing the fire rate, increase the energy pool and your total health, you do damage by running into enemies and you can raise that and of course your speed. So there are some slight RPG elements in it.
So yeah, even though the presentation is absolutely terrible it’s not a half bad game. Give the trial a try and just try to work your way past the horrible graphics and music. Each level has a huge tough to beat boss surrounded by enemies to make it that much harder. It’s not an easy game, but it’s also pretty forgiving with the health pickups and all that jazz. Definitely at least worth a try. When/if I ever beat it I’ll put up an actual review.
